I have thick hair that falls a few inches below the shoulder, and a cross between a heart/square-shaped face. I also wanted to make my hair look less bulky in back by kind of razor-cutting the ends, but the lady who cut my hair said it would make it look like split ends-but my mom disagrees.

OK, first off, do NOT---I repeat, DO NOT---razor off the back unless your hair stylist clearly knows what he/she is doing. When done unevenly, it might look poofy in a square way and emphasize the thickness.
