Does layering your hair make it thicker or thinner??

I always thought that you get layers so it will look thicker, but my sister keeps insisting that it will make it thinner...i dunno. I have really puffy thick hair and i its SUPER long (like down to my butt) and i want to cut it, but if i cut it short it will be puffy, so i'm trying to decide how to cut it (btw my mom won't let me thin it...) so should i layer it? (rememebr-its SUPER thick)

If its dead thick and you want it thin. Do NOT layer. You should get it cut but not short. Halfway down ur back maybe. I got my thick hair cut short and layered last month and its awful now. It looks great after its just done but ull get outta bed 2 days later and ull be wonderin y u did that 2 ur hair...

it depends how they cut it, thinner. if they are really good they could make the layers blend in.

Well I have really thin hair and its all layered (choppy but just past my shoulders) and certain ares seem thinner, so yes layering should make it thinner, allthough if you get too many layers certain areas can feel thicker. Its all about the style. Just try to ask your hairdresser to razor cut your hair so it gives it a thinner appearance and Im sure it will work!

It depends on what type of hair you have. If it is poker straight, it will make it thinner. If your hair is wavy or curly layering it is going to make it thicker since you are losing hair to weigh it down. Also, it depends on how long your hair is. Ask your hairdresser.

I have really thick hair and I layered it once...BIG mistake. It did kind of make it thinner but then the front part of my hair grew out longer than the back and it looked like I was a human poodle. Big freakin pom poms at the side of my face.

from my experience it makes it thicker, a couple years ago i had damaged the ends of my hair from over coloring, and i had it layered and it looked so much better, i got so many compliments on it and it looked thicker and fuller and healthier, because all the dead was off and it all blended in together.

If it is thick, then you should really layer it. Or else your hair will look like a giant wig if you don't. Plus layers gives it a more defined look. Try it out.

my hair is very thick too and when i cut it shorter it tends to get fluffy at the bottom and i hated it so i started keeping it longer and getting layers in it..... this works out great because you get to keep the length and physically it is thinner since parts of it are cut so it is less heavy and hassle-free... the other great thing abut layers is that you can style them to make your hair look full of volume- more wavy or curly styles or to make it look sleeker- by straightening it.

also in the summer, my stylist had this little comb-looking thing that had a thin razor at the base and she ran it through some small middle sections of my hair to thin it out somewhat without using chemicals... this helped alot since long thick hair gets very hot and doesn't allow the skin to breathe and the back of my neck used to break out if i had it down on very hot days

My hair is extremely thick as well, and I have to have layers to cope. There is a danger that your hair will take on that pyramid shape when it is layered--like Gilda Radnor's character Roseanne Roseannadanna on the original Saturday Night Live.

My hair isn't quite that curly. I honestly have it layered and thinned to make it more manageable. I live on a Hawaiian island where most women grow their hair long and wear it up in a clip most of the time. I've developed the same habit, and layering makes it easier for me to do that.

it makes it have more volume. i`m sure you don`t need to do that with the texture and length of your hair, unless you straighten it.

I had thick hair and I got my hair really layered. Don't cut it too short...try mid section or shoulder length. Also ask for a thinning at the salon with a hair type of razor.
