Use a leave-in conditioner to help keep it undamaged. Don't perm or iron or use excessive heat drying it. You can do pretty french braids, pony tails (I had hip long hair), and to keep it tamed, would use abut 6 or 7 of those thread covered elastics (without the metal clamps) indifferent colors to match my clothes llike a biker braid down the back. You might like bangs cut and styled... It is much healthier to keep long hair just wash and wear, with nice smelling shampoo and conditioner, instead of using lots of chemicals to color or perm, etc. Then tie it up in various ponytail styles, or I did a bunlike style, with bringing the front toward the crown of the head at back, and clamp it with a barette, then bring the bottom up from the back and over the top barrette, and clamp it all up on top with another barette, then roll it back down and under and clamp it all in place with another barrette or two. It looks like a big roll on the back. Or you can turn it into a braid on top and then wrap that around in a bun.

I have thick hair and I f'ed up one time and got it permed, thinking I wanted more curl than I already had. so the entire time I had the perm, until it grew out and I cut it off, I wore it in a french twist with the curly ends falling down the back over the twist. I got many compliments on it. also, when my hair was really long, I wore it in a bun. just pull it back like a pony tail, twist it around in a bun, and throw a hair clip in there. if you have thick hair, it should hold for several hours if you're not doing a lot of jumping around.

I trully feel for you 'cause I suffered the same affliction 'til I met Usha, the world's greatest hairdresser. I don't know what works for you but she cut my hair shoulder length, thinned it out with layers, and chemically relexed my curls. The best advise I've ever gotten for my hair though was to always condition and never let it dry naturally- curl it yourself, straighten, or blow dry it, but don't let nature do its worst. Hope that helps you as much as it helped me.
