I would go to a professional and get it done, but treat the dandruff first. I use head and shoulders shampoo. You should try it because it works good. Going to a hair specialist won't fix your hair right away it might take a few months because you'll need to go once a month.

Well I have thick long hair as well. Its not wavy unless I need a perm. What I suggest is to wash it 2 times or more during the week. These shampoos and conditioners work really well: Optimum care [Soft sheen Carson], Ion, Paul Mitchell, and Proclaim. Treat your hair first and worry about the dandruff later. Use a hot oil treatment for the dandruff. You can get it any beauty store for as cheap as a $1.00. After you wash it Use mosturising lotion. Pink lotion is the best. Also use foaming mousse. Motions and Proclaim have great foaming mousse products. Roll your hair all over with big rollers if you're hair is medium to long. If its short use the biggest rollers that your hair can fit. Dry it with a blow dryer its going to take a while because its thick! Once its dry take the rollers out and spray it with oil sheen. lots of sheen (also before you roll your hair it helps to grease the scalp before rolling it). comb it out and style as usual. Try this first before having your hair reborn. If you do have it reborn it will probably grow back the same because its your genes.
